Kiwi Ranger

Become a Tiritiri Matangi Kiwi Ranger today!!!

Just ask for a booklet from the Guiding Manager, Educator or one of the Guides as soon as you arrive on the Island, or come into the shop at the Visitor Centre and ask for a Kiwi Ranger booklet. Complete the activities during your visit and ask one of the Guides to check it for you to receive your own special Kiwi Ranger badge (illustrated below).

A gold coin donation towards the cost of the booklet and badge is always gratefully accepted.

About Kiwi Ranger

The Kiwi Ranger programme, developed through the Department of Conservation, is designed to give youngsters - and the young at heart - a better understanding of nature and conservation issues.

Until 2013, Kiwi Ranger was only available in the South Island, at ten very special conservation sites. Then on 1 June 2013, Tiritiri Matangi's Kiwi Ranger programme was launched with the help of actor and eco-warrior Lucy Lawless. This made the Island the first Kiwi Ranger site in the North Island.

Each Kiwi Ranger site has its own booklet, which contains a range of activities relating to that site. The number of activities you complete depends on your age - we expect a bit more of older kids than younger ones - but of course you may complete as many as you like. You might be asked to make notes on the weather, or listen to and identify bird calls, or list the things that are important about the site you are visiting.

Every Kiwi Ranger site also has its own specially designed badge, which is given to you when you've completed your activities and had your booklet checked.

Kiwi Ranger adds a new dimension to the Tiritiri experience for families and groups of children. We hope you will enjoy it and be inspired to learn more about this wonderful Island.

You can find out more about Kiwi Ranger, including the other sites, by visiting their website.
